AppLock Face/Voice Recognition – Support

Please see below for helpful tips and FAQs about AppLock

Android 5 users – If you upgraded to Android 5 and AppLock stopped working or if you cannot enable Usage Access during enrollment, go to Settings-> Security->Apps with usage access and enable AppLock. That should fix any problems and allow you to complete enrollment. If you do not see “Apps with usage access” in the Settings, your device might not offer this feature. Unfortunately, AppLock cannot work on those devices.

Enrollment FAQs:

Q: Enrollment never finishes/I see a “timed out” message. What’s going on?

A: AppLock needs to enroll your face and voice at the same time. Make sure you are in a well-lit, quiet location for enrollment. While looking at the camera say your Unlock Phrase 3 times clearly with short pauses between each one. If enrollment is not completing, either AppLock cannot clearly see your face or AppLock is not hearing you say your Unlock Phrase 3 times. If you see your face on the screen with shadows or if it is dark, you need to move to a location with more light. Check the top of the screen during enrollment. If you see a red sun indicator, then there is not enough light to enroll. Also check the box around your face. If it is red then AppLock cannot see you clearly. It might also be that AppLock is not hearing you say your Unlock Phrase 3 times. Check the top of the screen again. If the mic indicator is red, then there is too much background noise and you need to move to a quieter location. Also check the sound indicator above the face box. If the sound meter is not moving as you speak, then the app cannot hear you. If you are having any problems enrolling, text in the upper left should indicate what the problem is. Please see the enrollment video below for further help with how to enroll.

Q: During enrollment I see a message “We didn’t hear you speaking.” What’s going on?

A: AppLock needs to enroll your face and voice at the same time. Make sure you are in a well-lit, quiet location for enrollment. While looking at the camera say “Hello, Blue Genie” 3 times clearly and loudly enough to be heard easily. If you are still having issues, check the sound meter at the bottom of the screen during enrollment. If the sound meter is not moving as you speak, then the app cannot hear you.

Q: AppLock says the microphone or camera is in use. How do I fix that?

A: AppLock needs access to both the microphone and camera to enroll your face and voice. If you see this message, close any other apps that might be using the microphone or camera. Instagram, Snapchat and camera app itself are a few apps that can cause this issue if running in the background.

If you are sure that no other apps are using the mic or camera, go to Android Settings, tap on Apps/Application Manager and open AppLock. Hit Force Stop. Then restart AppLock. That should clear up any issues.

Q: During enrollment AppLock closes with a black screen or crashes. What’s going on?

A: Your device might not have enough storage space to complete enrollment. Please open Android Settings, go to Storage and check the available internal storage. (Note: this is not SD card storage.) To complete enrollment you will need at least 300-400MB of free internal storage space on your device. If your device does not have this much space available, uninstall other apps or clear data or cache from other apps. To clear app data, go to Apps/Applications/Application Manager and open individual apps. Hit clear data or clear cache. Note that clearing app data will remove all user data from that app. Be careful. AppLock only uses this much storage for enrollment. Once enrollment is complete almost all of this space will again be free.

Troubleshooting:

Q: AppLock is no longer locking my apps. What happened?

A: If you upgraded to Android 5 and AppLock stopped working or if you cannot enable Usage Access during enrollment, go to Settings-> Security->Apps with usage access and enable AppLock. That should fix any problems and allow you to complete enrollment.

Q: AppLock says that my face authentication has been improved with new images. What does that mean?

A: AppLock is very good at recognizing you across widely varying conditions. However, there might be times when your appearance is so different, like sunglasses, that AppLock cannot recognize you. In these cases, if you enter your PIN, pattern or password correctly, AppLock might choose to add that image to your enrollment. AppLock actually learns what you look like over time and gets even better at recognizing you! NOTE: Never enter your PIN, pattern or password if anyone else looked at the camera while AppLock was trying to authenticate. You can accidentally add their image to your enrollment. You can always review the images that have been added to your enrollment by opening AppLock and going to Enrollment Library. If there are images of anyone who is not you in the enrollment, you should delete that image by clicking on the trash can icon.

Q: The app says the microphone or camera is in use.

Q: Why can’t I unlock my apps?

A: If you have locked an app with TrulySecure mode, both your face AND voice are required. On the authentication screen check the icons at the bottom of the screen. If you see a face and mic icon with a plus sign between them, you are in TrulySecure mode.

You might have liveness detection turned on. Check this under Advanced Settings. Liveness detection will require you to move your face a small amount, which can be achieved by simply moving your head back and forth slightly, blinking or just speaking your passphrase.

Q: After I authenticate with AppLock my app is gone. What happened?

A: In order to lock your apps AppLock has to temporarily jump in front of your locked app. In rare cases apps don’t like that and just close. Then when you authenticate, your app is gone. Unfortunately there isn’t anything AppLock can do to prevent this. But usually if you open the app a second time it will open just fine.

Q: I just tapped a locked app and AppLock did not lock it. What happened?

A: For your convenience, if you close a locked app, AppLock allows that app to be re-opened without authenticating for 5 seconds after you close it.

Q: My locked apps are re-locked before the time I set in Advanced Settings. What’s going on?

A: When you lock your phone or it goes to sleep, AppLock resets the locking timer and all apps will have to be unlocked again when you use your phone again. This is a security feature designed to keep others from picking up your phones and accessing your apps. Apps only stay unlocked for as long as you have set and while you are still using your phone.

Q: AppLock opened my app with a picture of me!

A: Turn on Liveness Detection from Advanced Settings. Liveness detection determines the presence of a live human being. This prevents an impostor from trying to gain entry to your apps using a picture of your face. When turned on, liveness detection will require you to move your face a small amount, which can be achieved by simply moving your head back and forth slightly, blinking or just speaking your passphrase.

AppLock Settings FAQs:

Q: What is the difference between Convenience Mode and TrulySecure mode?

A: Convenience mode is the most flexible and easiest to authenticate into. Apps locked with Convenience mode can be unlocked by showing your face OR speaking your passphrase. TrulySecure is the most secure way to protect your most private apps. Apps locked with TrulySecure mode will have to be unlocked with your face AND your voice, making it nearly impossible or anyone else to get in.

Q: What is liveness?

A: Liveness detection determines the presence of a live human being. Enabling this prevents an impostor from trying to gain entry to your apps using a photo of your face. When turned on, liveness detection will require you to move your face a small amount, which can be achieved by simply moving your head back and forth slightly, or just speaking your passphrase.

Q: What are the data upload settings for?

A: While AppLock performs all authentication directly on the device, some image and audio data are logged to Sensory servers to help us improve our recognition algorithms. This is done only when the phone is on Wi-Fi to avoid using up your data plan, and can be turned off in AppLock under Advanced Settings. When Upload Images and Audio is turned off, AppLock will upload only generic, non-identifying performance statistics (e.g., success or failure of authentication attempts) to Sensory’s servers. If you have questions about our policies, please open About from the left menu and tap on Terms and Conditions.

Q: What is the Device Administrator setting?

A: Turn this on for maximum protection. When this setting is off AppLock can be uninstalled by another user with access to your device. Other users could gain access to your apps. If you enable AppLock as a Device Administrator, then no one but you can uninstall AppLock but you! Important note: always make sure that the Android Settings app is locked by AppLock. Otherwise another user can simply turn off AppLock Device Administrator access and then uninstall it.

Q: What is the Default Launcher setting?

A: Turn this on for maximum protection. If your device is slow to start AppLock on a reboot, it might be possible for someone to open a locked app right after a reboot. If AppLock is the Default Launcher, then AppLock will start running before any other apps and this cannot happen.

Q: What is the Usage Access setting?

A: As of Android 5, AppLock must use the Usage Access setting to see what apps you are opening so that AppLock can lock them. To protect your privacy Android requires that you enable this permission directly from Android Settings.

Other AppLock FAQs:

Q: How is AppLock different than the other app locking apps on the Play Store™?

A: Pattern and password based app locks are slow and require remembering your pattern or password. There are other face based app locking apps as well. But what happens in the dark? Then you have to again use a pattern or password. Not with AppLock! AppLock can unlock your apps with your face OR voice. When it’s dark, simply use your voice to unlock apps. And when it’s noisy use your face. For maximum security you can enable TrulySecure mode which requires both your face AND voice to authenticate.

Q: Does Sensory make any other apps?

A: Yes! Sensory also makes a great, always-listening VoiceDial app. Check it out here!

Q: Can AppLock recognize me from only part of my face?

A: Yes! AppLock does not require that any particular part of your face be visible. If AppLock can see enough of your face to recognize you, you’ll be authenticated!

Known Issues:

  • Android 5 users – If you upgraded to Android 5 and AppLock stopped working or if you cannot enable Usage Access during enrollment, go to Settings-> Security->Apps with usage access and enable AppLock. That should fix any problems and allow you to complete enrollment.
  • AppLock only supports portrait orientation. We will be adding support for landscape orientation in the future.
  • Some Android 5 devices are missing the Android API AppLock uses to lock apps. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about this. Until these device manufacturers include this API, AppLock cannot work on these devices. If your device is affected you will not see “Apps with Usage Access” under Security in the Android Settings.
  • The Android Downloads app cannot be locked and thus does not appear in the Applications list in AppLock.
  • Some apps do not show up in the Applications list. We query the phone’s OS for all installed apps. However, we can only list those apps that we are told about. Unfortunately it seems that sometimes we are not given all of the apps that are actually installed. We cannot control this.

Enrollment Instructions:

Before you can use AppLock it must learn your face and voice. The enrollment process might be different than other apps you’ve used since no other apps offer what AppLock offers. However, the enrollment process is quick and easy to do!

  1. First, choose your voice unlock passphrase. Choose any of the three listed or choose any phrase you want. For best performance, choose a phrase that is 4-5 syllables.
  2. Before starting enrollment, find a place to enroll that is well-lit and quiet with as little background noise as possible
  3. Hold the device at face height so that you are looking straight at the camera
  4. Once enrollment starts, make sure your face is clearly visible and centered with the box. If the box around your face turns blue, AppLock can see you.
  5. Speak slowly and clearly and say your chosen unlock phrase as prompted on-screen, with short pauses between each phrase, until enrollment finishes. Usually you must say your phrase 3 times, but it can sometimes take more attempts.
  6. That’s all you have to do! Choose your back up authentication method and you’re ready to lock and unlock your apps effortlessly and almost instantly
